Requirements

1 Leave a comment on paragraph 1 0 This class is designed to be a workshop in academic writing; as such, we will be writing a lot, and engaging in extensive discussion of each other’s work. The assignments ask you to experiment with voice, methodology, and the meaning of “scholarly” work. We will try to get away from the common presumption that there is one (often dry and jargon-laden) way to do academic writing. In the process, I hope that you will be willing to share work that is not fully polished and perhaps even not fully formed. I will participate as we go and share my own responses to each of the writing assignments, though I will not demand workshop feedback.

2 Leave a comment on paragraph 2 0 We will post all our writing at the class website, but student writing will be available only to those registered for the class. We will be using WordPress and CommentPress, open source web content management software that is among the most widely used among academics; the skills required to work with this kind of web software is fast becoming as necessary to scholarly writers as familiarity with citation styles. Part of the work that you will be doing when you post your writing, then, will be to take the time to make sure that you understand what happens when you hit “post,” and that you know how to make the appropriate edits if your work doesn’t look the way you expected it to. I am happy to spend time in class and office hours going over the software, but I expect you to make an effort to figure it out on your own too.

3 Leave a comment on paragraph 3 0 Writing tasks
There will be four formal assignments, ranging in length from 750 to 3000 words and in genre from position statement to critical memoir to analytical reflection on a course text; a fifth asks that you expand and revise one of the four pieces of writing you have created in the course.
Assignment 1: position statement. Due Tuesday September 10.
Assignment 2: your personal archive. Due Tuesday October 8.
Assignment 3: critical memoir. Due Tuesday November 5.
Assignment 4: analytical reflection. Due Tuesday November 19.
Assignment 5: extend and elaborate. Draft due Monday December 2; final version due Tuesday December 10.

4 Leave a comment on paragraph 4 0 You are also required to use CommentPress to engage online with your colleagues’ writing, posting responses to at least two of your peers for every assignment. Make sure that you have responded substantively at least once to every one of your classmates by the end of the semester.

5 Leave a comment on paragraph 5 0 Discussion Leading/Text introduction
Three times in the semester, you will be responsible for explicating one of the readings -–– an article or a chapter or section of a book –– to the class. You will introduce the text, explain what you found meaningful about it and what questions you have about it, and lead discussion with your peers. Sign up for presentations at this link.

6 Leave a comment on paragraph 6 0 On the days you present, you should:
• bring key passages and discussion questions (you may post these on the website to project them, or make a handout)
• provide us with an example of how we might use the ideas from your text: in the classroom, in a critical reading, in thinking about our experiences of everyday life.
• make contact with your co-presenters prior to class. I encourage you to get together and create collaborative presentations wherever possible!
